Richard L. Palmer
(August 23, 1931 - December 27, 2013

Richard L. Palmer, age 82 of Bridgeport, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013 in Bridgeport at the Lawrence Community Healthcare Center after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on August 23, 1931 in Petty Township to Samuel Edward Palmer and his wife Bessie (Shank) Palmer. Richard married Martha LaReta Lancaster on December 30, 1958, and she preceded him in death on May 6, 1999.

Richard served his country as a member the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

He was a long-time breeder of Hereford cattle, retired from farming in 1977, was a major proponent in the development of the Lawrence County 4H Fair Grounds. He served as a past Fair board member, 4-H leader, and also served on the Petty School Board. He became an oil field hand after he retired from farming and then became an Illinois State well inspector. He also enjoyed 4-wheeler riding.

Surviving family includes: one- Michael Palmer and wife Rita: two grandchildren- Davonne Long and husband Anthony of Albion, IL and Samuel Palmer of rural Sumner: one brother: two sisters: and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

There will be no services. As per Richards wishes, his body will be cremated. Cunningham Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling all arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Lawrence County Junior Fair Association directly or through the funeral home. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.cunninghamfuneralhomes.com.

Thank you all for the prayers. We are slowly going through things and getting stuff taken care of. Dad has his hands full with all the legalities. We have been finding all kinds of ridge runner things as we've been sorting. He truly enjoyed going down there and riding in general. Tank you again
