Memorial Weekend Ride 5-27-2012

Postby Ky Kodiak » Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:01 pm

Memorial Day weekend was looking to be a non-riding weekend for me this year this year since I passed on a ride at Pickett on Sat. as I was just exhausted from working 40hrs straight, so when I finally made it home Friday evening I was ready for some sleep!! I set the alarm for 2am Sat. morn, but just couldn't force myself out of bed  All day Saturday I was kicking myself for missing the Pickett ride. I posted around to see if anyone might be riding Sunday, to still hopefully get a ride in, since I was off Monday. Well late Saturday night I found out Rob was in Evarts and was riding Sunday, after a short conversation with him on the phone I made the decision to load the XP and head to Harlan Co.

I rolled into the N.Evarts rv park around 8am ready to ride  Rob & Brenda was getting ready to go to breakfast, but I stayed behind to get unloaded and be ready to hit the trails when they got back...I was just excited that I was riding somewhere

So they returned from breakfast and were getting ready and I asked who else was going, Rob said Shawn & Christy were planning on going but they were still sacked out and worn out from the events from Saturday. I tried to raise them with no success, so just the 3 of us headed out to Cranks. It is a very beautiful area and was a very uneventful ride until be came up on a blocked section of trail, that would have been a job to clear with a chainsaw, but the only saw we had was Rob's folding handsaw  And here is were the days events would go south!! Brenda found a way around the blockage to get us back on the trail, so I walked back to meet her and take a look at the short but kinda steep and slightly off-camber climb, to bypass the blocked trail. I walked up to see what it looked like and didn't think it was bad at all. So we decided to take it and get on with the ride  I got on the XP and backed it up to get lined up with what I thought would be a very small challenge and we would be on our way...NOT!! I don't know how I missed it when we walked it the first time, but about 3/4 of the way up was a pretty good size rock  My left front wheel hit the rock and sent my front end up in the air and then when the the rear wheel rolled up on it that's when I went to vertical to save it   I felt the bike starting to twist to the right so I let go and hit the ground while it flipped and rolled it's way back down the hill towards Rob & Brenda...it sounded like a trainwreck. So after we decided I was ok we got the XP rolled over on all fours and stared accessing the damage...it wasn't pretty, but after pulling the front bumper out enough to steer it again we were on our way. About a 100yds further down Rob found another short but kinda steep way up, but when it was my turn I hadn't had enough time to settle my nerves so I let Rob take mine up :twitch:

Anyways after all of this, we came across more blocked trails..we finally had to turn around and came back down the hill that threw me :!: We rode the rest of the day without any other problems

Here are the pics from the ride

Thanks Preston!

I will, and the XP is at the Dr. now for some extensive plastic surgery and they are still checking for internal injuries

I should know by the end of the week the full extent of the damage!

It's kind of Ironic that the first pic I took that day, was of a wrecker

Now that right there is what is called Trail Riding. Good video and pictures. Could serve as a learning video as well to always wear your helmet boy and girls, cause you never know when it might happen. Glad your OK Dale and we won't make you change your handle to Flipper.
